Why don’t more agents go out on their own?
There are a lot of reasons why, but the top reason is that an agent’s current or past broker has made it look harder than it needs to be and loaded with liability. The truth of the matter is that there’s no more liability for being broker/owner over just being an agent if you’re the only agent in your brokerage. The liability comes in when you bring on agents to your brokerage. Do you have to have agents? Of course not.
So, what’s holding you back? As you can see from the stats above, 34% of agents hold a broker’s license. 14% are Broker Associates with 20% being in the Managing Broker position. If agents on average remain at a firm for 3 years, shouldn’t that be telling you something? It says that agents are looking for a better place for their business, but they assume that going out on their own is too big of a leap. In short, it’s not a big leap at all. Agents just need the proper guidance to get there.
When you look at the franchise numbers, 42% of agents are with a franchise office. But, only 11% of brokers opted to go the franchise route. Why such a big discord? It’s because franchises are mostly too expensive to purchase for new brokers looking to go out on their own and some are exclusive to only one franchisee for a given market.
